Frequently Asked Questions

Do you plan parties?

No, but we are happy to coordinate with venues, event planners and family members to determine the logistics for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah service.

Can you find us an officiant to lead the service?

Absolutely! In Jewish tradition, any community member can lead a prayer service. We find that the most organic culmination of the learning process is for the student and mentor to lead the service together. Hebrew Helpers also works with rabbis, cantors, teachers, etc. when the family has a personal connection or preference.

Who are your teachers?

We refer to our teachers as mentors because of the strong personal connections that they foster with each family and student and the range of study in our program. Each of the mentors has an extensive background in Jewish history, Torah study, Torah & Haftarah chanting and Hebrew language. Read more about our mentors here.

Where are you located?

We primarily teach all over greater Los Angeles, New York City and its suburbs, the DC Metro area, Boston, San Francisco, and the Philadelphia area including New Jersey and Delaware. However, we’re not limited to those areas and have mentored students all over the world. Contact us with your location and we can connect you with a mentor that’s right for you. We are also able to teach remotely through online video sessions for the right student.

What if we don’t belong to a synagogue?

You have come to the right place! We can help with any Jewish educational needs and all of the details for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah service.

Do you work with synagogues?

Yes, Hebrew Helpers often teaches in conjunction with synagogues. Additionally, we support and mentor children with learning differences. Also, we mentor children whose families join a synagogue too late for the bar/bat mitzvah process in that synagogue.

What if I am just looking for Jewish Learning?

Hebrew Helpers provides all sorts of Jewish learning opportunities for children, adults, and families in addition to Bar/Bat Mitzvah training including Hebrew language and general Jewish studies. Please contact us for more information.

How long is Bar/Bat Mitzvah prep process?

It varies depending the student’s background and the plans for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah service. To prepare for a private service for a student with little to no background in Jewish studies, we recommend at least 12-16 months.

How much does it cost?

Hourly rates for lessons are based on your needs and location. Because Hebrew Helpers personalizes each service, rates for planning, coordinating and officiating a Bar/Bat Mitzvah service vary based on your plans. Please contact us for further details.

Where are the lessons held?

Hebrew Helpers holds lessons in your home or in a location of your choice.
