Who We Are

Our Mentors work one-on-one with students, often supplemented by group and family sessions. Mentors come from varying backgrounds, from educators to camp counselors to writers and actors. All Mentors have formal training in Jewish education and Hebrew language and are skilled in teaching Torah and Haftarah chanting. As part of our personalized approach to learning, Hebrew Helpers will match families and students with the best guide for their experience.

Todd Shotz

Founder & Executive Director

Todd is the Founder and Executive Director of Hebrew Helpers. After many years as a Jewish educator in both New York City and Los Angeles, Todd started Hebrew Helpers in 2005 with the mission to create authentic and meaningful Jewish learning experiences without boundaries or restrictions while at the same time, paying tribute to tradition. Raised in Elkins Park, PA, Todd studied with Cantor Charles Davidson at Congregation Adath Jeshurun. He is an alum of the University of Pennsylvania, Alexander Muss High School in Israel and Project Otzma. In his spare time, he produces independent feature films.
Debbie Jaffe

Debbie Jaffe

East Coast Director

Debbie Jaffe is the East Coast Director of Hebrew Helpers. She has been teaching kids how to read Torah since she was 15 years old, and has mentored hundreds of students for their B’nai Mitzvah services in Philadelphia, New York, and Los Angeles since 2000. Her mission is not just to teach students about Judaism and prepare them for their service, but also to show them that Judaism can be fun, interesting and relevant in their lives. Debbie has an M.F.A. in Acting and worked for several years in film and TV. She lives in Philadelphia with her young son, Rami.
Robyn Altman

Robyn Altman

West Coast Director

Robyn Altman was one of the first mentors ever to work with Hebrew Helpers and currently serves as its West Coast Director, as well as a mentor. Robyn sees her role as a mentor to both nurture and guide her students (and their parents) through the process of becoming B’nai Mitzvah. Robyn is a mom of two and also runs the day camp for Temple Akiba in Culver City every summer. Originally from the Philadelphia area, Robyn’s Jewish education began in pre-school and continued through high school, USY, college at Penn State University, and a semester abroad at Tel Aviv University. Robyn always tells her students that there is always more to learn when it comes to our heritage and traditions.

Wendy Jackler

Wendy Jackler is the managing director of Hebrew Helpers.

Ami Yares

East Coast Musical Director

Ami Yares is a Philadelphia-based educator and musician. Jewish music’s diversity plays a pivotal role in his life. Ami speaks Hebrew competently and has a special insight into Hebrew prose and poetry. He loves to help people appreciate this ancient, yet modern language. While living in Israel, he worked with Israelis and Palestinians on music-based shared society projects and traveled across the US and Europe to teach and perform music about Jewish identity. Ami also believes deeply in the healing and therapeutic power of the arts and works during daylight hours with BuildaBridge International and local community-minded artists. Together, they provide art-making programs for trauma-affected individuals and communities.

Justin Stein

West Coast Musical Director

Justin Stein is a vocalist, bassist, and guitarist and has shared the stage and recorded albums with various musical artists and producers, such as Diane Reeves, Don Was, Theodore Bikel, Peter Yarrow, Tom Paxton, Arlo Guthrie, and Oscar-winning composer Yuval Ron. Through his company, Justin Stein Music, Justin works as a musician, singer, bandleader, arranger, consultant, and recording artist. In his work for the Jewish community, Justin has also done concerts with members of the Abayudaya from Uganda, and recorded music with the Lemba Tribe from Zimbabwe. Justin’s primary focus is always on music’s ability to foster human connection – connection to others, connection to nature, and connection to our inner selves.
Alexis Snyder

Alexis Snyder

Mentor

Alexis Snyder is based in Philadelphia where she has been teaching Hebrew and Jewish studies since she was confirmed in 2007. She is certified to teach Hebrew to children with special needs, has a Bachelor’s in studio arts, as well as a Masters in Elementary Education, and a Masters in Special Education. Having a learning disability herself and struggling with Hebrew as a child, she feels that she is able to use her experiences to better assist children who may need extra support. Aside from teaching Hebrew, she is also a general education teacher and a pet sitter. She is a music lover, avid baker, and makes a mean matzo ball soup.
Ben Wacks

Ben Wacks

Mentor

Ben Wacks has made Washington, DC his community where he teaches in the Gan HaYeled program at Adas Israel Congregation. In addition to mentoring for Hebrew Helpers, he also teaches a weekly Hebrew High school program for 7th-9th graders where he leads discussions on Jewish values in pop culture and American Jewish history. He cares deeply about connecting with young professionals in DC through his leadership with the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and serves on the Steering Committee of Washington Hebrew Congregation’s young professional network called 2239. Ben grew up in South Florida where he graduated with his BA in Political Science and Jewish Studies at Florida Atlantic University.

Daphna Gutman

Mentor

Daphna Venyige Gutman is a singer, song leader, prayer leader, and music educator — helping individuals and families connect with Jewish tradition through meaningful music and ritual. She spent many years living in Israel, where she worked on Kibbutz, served in the Israeli Defense Forces, and later spent over a decade at ABC News. Daphna recently completed a two-year fellowship at the Davvenen Leadership Training Institute (DLTI), focusing on Jewish communal prayer leadership and public ritual. She holds a B.A. in Middle Eastern Studies from UC Berkeley and serves as a cantorial soloist throughout the Los Angeles area while also teaching religious school. She is the mother of two.

David Schwartzbaum

David Schwartzbaum

Mentor

David Schwartzbaum is an educator and comedian living in Los Angeles. Born in Miami, David now lives in Los Angeles where he has been working with students on Hebrew and Jewish studies for over a decade as a teacher and administrator. He currently works for several Jewish organizations in Los Angeles where he focuses on weaving in the values of performing arts with Jewish tradition. When not mentoring students, David works as an actor/comedian, having toured the country teaching improv, sketch and creative writing to thousands of people of all ages. David spends his free time either on stage or watching the Miami Heat and professional wrestling. The most impressive fact about David is he has proudly attended every WrestleMania in recent history.

Diana Epstein

Mentor

A Philly born native, Diana Epstein grew up attending Perelman Jewish Day School, Barrack Hebrew Academy and Camp Ramah. She also studied abroad in Israel on Tichon Ramah Yerushalayim (TRY) when she was in high school. She graduated from Brandeis University and currently lives in Center City Philadelphia. Diana’s favorite parasha is Balak, her favorite service is the Torah service, and she is on a quest to find the best bagel shop in Philadelphia!

George Shotz

Mentor

George Shotz brings over 25 years of community leadership and involvement to his work as a mentor. Originally from Elkins Park, PA, he grew up surrounded by Jewish learning, teaching in the Adath Jeshurun Torah Club and leading children’s High Holiday services for more than 15 years. Professionally, he helped grow early-stage startups, including joining Instacart as its 30th employee and helping it expand nationwide. A longtime leader in Jewish community life, George has served on boards including Jewish Heritage Programs and the Jewish Business Network, earning a Leadership Honoree Award in 2008, and spent eight years helping run LimmudPhilly. Now living in Los Angeles, George brings his love of learning, community, and a good show tune to everything he does, especially when helping students feel confident, supported, and proud of their B’nai Mitzvah journey.

Hannah Ableman

Mentor

Hannah Ableman is thrilled to join the Hebrew Helpers team as a mentor. A New Jersey native, Hannah grew up attending Young Judaea camps and completed her gap year on Young Judaea Year Course in Israel. Hannah spent five years teaching Hebrew School to elementary-aged kids, both at the Boston-Area Jewish Education Program (BJEP) in Waltham, Massachusetts, and at Adas Israel Congregation in Washington D.C. Hannah graduated from Brandeis University with a degree in Public Health and is now pursuing her Master’s in Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania. Hannah’s favorite Jewish ritual is making challah and sharing it with friends and family.

Hannah Srulevich

Mentor

Hannah Srulevich is a recent transplant to LA looking to get more involved in the Jewish community! She loves creative writing and hanging out with friends, and is always willing to share pictures of her dog Rudy. She’s passionate about learning new things and helping others. Hannah’s also been involved in Camp Ramah since she was eleven years old and tries to go back most summers, and she was able to go to Israel through her Jewish education at her synagogue when she was in high school.

Karen Lewin

Mentor

Karen Lewin is an experienced and accomplished Jewish educator, Karen has spent the past twenty years creating and implementing dynamic educational, religious, social and cultural programs for Jewish youth of all ages. Over the course of her career, Karen has served as a day-school teacher, preschool director, youth advisor and Hebrew School principal. Karen holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Elementary Education from Clark University and a master’s degree in Jewish Education from the Davidson Graduate School of Education at the Jewish Theological Seminary.Karen and her husband Joe are blessed with one son, Charlie, and a wonderful family cat, Wonder.

Lucy Beckett

Mentor

Lucy Beckett is originally from Sacramento, Lucy is so happy to be living in sunny Southern California. She graduated with a degree in Jewish Studies and Human Rights & Migration, and is finishing up her second year as a Springboard Fellow at Hillel at UCLA as a Jewish education specialist. She is now beginning a new role with the Diane and Guilford Glazer Foundation as a Program Officer managing grants for Jewish Young Adult Programs in Southern California. When she’s not mentoring students, you might find Lucy planning a Moishe House program, volunteering at local nonprofits with Repair the World, or spending time with friends or family at Disneyland!

Marc Rosenberg

Mentor

Marc Rosenberg is the VP of Diaspora Partnerships at Nefesh B’Nefesh – a non-profit organization that is revitalizing Aliyah from North America. He is an experienced educator and collaborates with several educational institutions in Jerusalem and around the world. From 7th grade English to a variety of topics at Hebrew schools, adolescents and adults, in person and online, he has been involved in educating for more than 25 years. Originally from Cherry Hill, NJ, Marc lives in Jerusalem with his awesome wife and 5 children. Marc joined Hebrew Helpers in 2021.

Marcus Loebenstein

Mentor

Marcus Loebenstein is an experienced educator with a strong background in Judaic studies and Hebrew instruction. He teaches Judaica and Hebrew to 4th and 6th graders at Temple Akiba of Culver City, where he creates engaging, meaningful lessons for students. Marcus is passionate about connecting students with their heritage and helping them explore their Jewish identity through personalized, student-centered approaches. His commitment to building rapport with students allows him to provide individualized support and guidance throughout their learning journey.

Marnina Schon Wirtschafter

Mentor

Marnina Schon Wirtschafter loves collaborating to tailor unique ritual and milestone experiences, from B’nai Mitzvah services to community-wide High Holiday services. She is passionate about making Jewishness accessible, meaningful, and joyful. Rooted in her pluralistic Jewish upbringing in Berkeley, Marnina studied Communications and Theater at UCLA, organized for justice with Bend the Arc, created community programming at IKAR and SIJCC, and explored Yiddishkayt in Germany and Eastern Europe. Recently, Marnina starred in the new Israeli dramedy series “Chanshi” and is developing a webseries about Torah with the Jewish Writers’ Initiative.

Micah O'Konis

Cantorial Soloist

Micah O’Konis is a musician and songwriter in Los Angeles who grew up in a reform synagogue in the Chicago suburbs. Micah leads music and teaches first grade at the Silverlake Jewish Learning Center, is an active member of the IKAR Purim spiel team, and writes musical comedy with partner and fellow Hebrew Helpers mentor Marnina Schon Wirtschafter.

Michael Schatz

East Coast Manager

Michael Schatz is the East Coast Manager of Hebrew Helpers. Michael holds a doctorate in Jewish Education from Gratz College and an honorary doctorate from JTS. A longtime Jewish educator and administrator, Michael also works as Principal of the religious school at Har Zion Temple in Penn Valley, and he lectures and conducts tours of historic Jewish Philadelphia. Michael spent many years as a USYer and USY director, and a Camp Ramah counselor and Rosh Edah (Poconos). In addition to his Jewish education work, Michael is an avid reader, and a pretty awesome baker specializing in challah, banana bread, and hamantaschen.
Natasha Cooper Benisty

Natasha Cooper Benisty

Mentor

Natasha Cooper-Benisty was raised in London and Long Island, but now calls New Jersey home. She holds a Bachelors in Drama from Vassar and a Masters in Jewish Communal Service and Nonprofit Management from Gratz College. Natasha lived in Israel after college, where she became fluent in modern Hebrew. She currently teaches 3rd grade Judaics and Hebrew at Golda Och Academy in West Orange, NJ and 5th and 6th grade Hebrew at Temple Beth Shalom in Livingston, NJ. Natasha enjoys sharing her enthusiasm about Judaism with her students.
Rachel Olshin

Rachel Olshin

Mentor

Rachel Olshin hails from the home of the best schnitzel sandwich on the East Coast, (Chickies, if you’re ever in Teaneck, NJ!). She has twelve years of Jewish day school education, spent a year studying in Jerusalem, and prefers matzah with cream cheese to matzah pizza. During her time at Queens College, City University of New York, she received a double BA in Media Studies and History and served as Shalom Hartman Migdalim Fellow at Hillel. When she’s not teaching Hebrew school and mentoring students, Rachel is a screenwriter, screen watcher, and gym-avoider.

Sammy Rabinowitz

Mentor

Samson Rabinowitz is a third-year college student at USC studying Popular Music Performance. A drummer, singer/songwriter, pianist, arranger, and concert producer, he’s a pop/rock music lover who is also classically trained in percussion. He grew up in Washington DC, where he was a well established participant and service coordinator at Adas Israel Congregation in the Traditional Egalitarian Minyan. Since moving to LA, Sammy’s taught religious school at Congregation Or Ami in Calabasas and (currently) Temple Beth Am, worked at Camp Alonim as a camp counselor, become the regular Torah reader at Adat Shalom, and chaperoned retreats for NFTY, deToledo HS, Adat Shalom, and USC’s Hillel.

Sarah Bialkin

Mentor

Sarah Bialkin is originally from the SF Bay Area (Go Giants!), and moved to NYC in 2014 to pursue a career in Musical Theatre and Jewish education. In 2020, she moved to Los Angeles to explore new opportunities in TV/Film and comedy. Sarah currently teaches 5th and 7th grade at Temple Akiba in Culver City. Jewish History, Mysticism, and Ethics are especially interesting to Sarah. Sarah has traveled to Poland, Israel (many times), and Amsterdam through different Jewish fellowship programs and will always consider herself to be a student. Sarah is also a frequent staff member for Birthright. She loves sharing her Jewish experience and traditions with her friends and community, and is on a mission to find the best baba ghanoush in the world!

Sarah Gronlund

Sarah Gronlund-Jacob

Sarah Gronlund-Jacob grew up in New Jersey and moved to LA almost 10 years ago for the sunshine and avocados. She grew up very active in the reform Jewish movement and spent a semester of high school living in Israel on a Kibbutz. Sarah has been teaching Hebrew School with different temples in NJ, Boston and LA for more than 15 years. Currently, she is the Community Liaison for Hillside Memorial Park and she works with the Jewish communities and nonprofits in the Los Angeles area building partnerships to make the world a better place for future generations.
Sarahann Goldstein

Sarahann Goldstein

Mentor

Sarahann Goldstein is a warm, nurturing and experienced B’nai Mitzvah mentor who has worked with young people and their families for over 10 years and has held a variety of senior roles in Jewish education for the past 15 years in NYC and Philadelphia including in Admissions for JTS. In addition to her work as a mentor, Sarahann currently works as the Assistant Director of Membership for Temple Beth Hillel-Beth El in Wynnewood, PA. Sarahann has a BA in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland and an MA in Counseling Psychology from Temple University.

Sophia Wilkof

Mentor

Sophia was born in Canton, OH, grew up in Oakland, CA and now lives in Brooklyn, NY. She attended pluralistic Jewish day schools and camp, which gave her an excellent foundation in Jewish education and a love of Jewish music. Sophia spent a year in Israel before college, where she studied at a modern-orthodox seminary and volunteered as a medical clown in a Jerusalem hospital. Sophia studied Theatre, Communications & Anthropology at UCLA, where she founded its only Jewish a cappella group, JEWkbox. Every summer, Sophia volunteers at Camp Kesem, which is for kids impacted by a parent’s cancer. Sophia moved to NY in 2017 to pursue a career as an actress and standup comedian. She loves leading services at the Nolita minyan, fostering dogs, and helping young people create or deepen a meaningful connection with their Judaism.

Sydney Toussiant

Mentor

Sydney Touissant is a Jewish educator, music educator, and doula in the Philadelphia area. With an MAT in Music Education from the University of the Arts, Sydney loves to foster a joy of music with all of her students. Sydney has tutored B’nai Mitzvah students at Rodeph Shalom and Society Hill Synagogues, and currently teaches at Society Hill’s Hebrew School. When she is not teaching or making music, Sydney likes to read, do crafts, go on walks, and cuddle with her cats, Theo and Nyla.

Zach Golden

Mentor

Zach Golden is a native of Long Beach, CA, and is a co-founder of Der Nister Downtown Jewish Center in Los Angeles. He is a long-time teacher of Hebrew and Yiddish and was previously the Deputy Yiddish Editor of the Forward. Zach was ordained as a rabbi at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles in 2020. To Zach, Judaism is more than a religion, it’s a whole worldview that lives inside people, waiting to emerge in a form unique to them. He loves seeing students’ eyes light up when they find a part of themselves in Jewish thought that they had never been able to fully express before. Zach also loves giving tours of Downtown LA to anybody he can convince to go along with him.

Zach Spiegel

Mentor

Zach is a casting professional whose desire to make Actors feel empowered in the audition room translates to his desire to empower the students he mentors. His approach to teaching is high energy, encouraging, and consists of a curiosity to learn from his students as much they want to learn from him. One of his favorite things to teach is Torah Trope. He’s a proud AMC A-Lister, dog lover, and avid theatre goer.
